Who is Gemma the Blacksmith? Monster Hunter Lore, Explained

Gemma, also known as Little Miss Forge, is one of the key supporting characters in Monster Hunter Wilds. As the Research Commission Smithy, she provides Hunters with the best tools to survive the dangers of the Forbidden Lands. However, Gemma’s story started long before Wilds. Once an eager apprentice raised by Troverians, she honed her craft alongside the legendary Caravan and the Ace Hunters. Let’s take a look at how Gemma’s journey has shaped her into the smith she is now.

Note: There are major spoilers for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and Wilds!

Her early life is shrouded in mystery; but what is known is that she was a human child adopted by Troverians. The dwarf-like race lives in underground areas and makes a living from mining ore and performing smithy work. As they take much pride in their craftsmanship, living near hot places like the Volcanic Hollow that help with smithing is a must. Otherwise, Troverians will become grumpy and depressed when they have to stop working.

While Little Miss Forge adopted her adoptive family’s work ethic and strengths, their weaknesses, not so much. She learned everything she could about smithing from the Troverians in her very young age. She promised, one day, she’ll become the ‘Greatest Smithy in the World.’

As fate has it, a Caravaneer, a Wyverian blacksmith, and their crew arrived in Harth, her hometown. They proposed a unique idea of making a ship that can travel the sands, seas, and skies, called the Arluq. But they cannot do it alone and need help from the Troverians to make it happen. However, the Harth Chief said they cannot help them — both physically and mentally. Some Nerscylla’s webbings have blocked the region’s lava flow, preventing them from working the natural forge.

It doesn’t take long for the Caravaneer’s Hunter to make short work of the Neopteron and other monsters that disrupt their journey. With the work for the Arluq completed, the Caravaneer’s crew prepared to bid farewell to the Troverians. Inspired by the caravan’s Wyverian blacksmith handywork and the changes they brought to her village, Gemma made her choice. To become the greatest smithy ever, she would need to leave and see the world beyond the forge.

Being a part of a traveling caravan allows Little Miss Forge to see and experience things she never knew before. She learned many new techniques about crafting weapons and armor from the resident Wyverian blacksmith, simply nicknamed ‘The Man’ by his fellow travelers. Gemma also gets to see first hand how Guild-approved Hunters work. She not only befriended the Caravan’s hired Hunter, but also a group of elite warriors called Ace Hunters.

Julius the Ace Commander and his team came across the Caravan when they were studying and combating a terrifying affliction spreading among monsters. Called the Frenzy Virus, this disease turns monsters into mindless berserkers with heightened aggression and power, posing a massive threat to the ecosystems.

While the Caravaneer and Julius discuss this dire circumstance, the Little Miss Forge quickly takes an interest in Nadia, the Ace Gunner. She can’t get her eyes off of Nadia’s expertly crafted Rathalos Heavy Bowgun.

During the Hunter and Ace Hunters of the hunt of Gore Magala, the source behind Frenzy, Gemma and The Man keep providing support behind the scenes. This includes researching the unique properties of Wystones. They found that sharpening weapons with Wystones suppresses the virus and helps cure afflicted monsters.

When a Rusted Kushala Daora suddenly attacked Dondurma, home of the Guild, Gemma and The Man sprung into action. They made sure that Ballistae, Cannons, and the Guild’s ultimate weapons, the Demolisher Cannon and Dragonator, are in tip-top-shape.

After the struggle, Gemma joins the Dondurmans in bidding farewell to the Ace Commander’s Master as he retires. She then returns to Harth, reunites with her father, and embraces him tightly before setting off to a new adventure with her friends.

Years passed, the world changed, but Gemma’s fire never faded. By the time Monster Hunter Wilds began, she was no longer just the excitable apprentice. Now, she was assigned to a handpicked team to brave an expedition unlike any before.

Gemma is optimistic and passionate, always spreading her enthusiasm to those around her. She always believes that those she trusts, and the weapons she forges, will always pull through. As such, she’s not worried when she hears that her old friend, Fabius the Ace Lancer, has to personally step in for an investigation.

However, sometimes she uses that energy and her constant work to bury the doubts lingering in her heart. Thankfully, after a heart-to-heart with Wilds‘ Hunter, she realizes that even the strongest weapons, and their Smithy, can’t fight by itself.

Now a master smith in her own right, Gemma — Little Miss Forge — isn’t just sitting back and sending off Hunters with her weapons. Alongside her colleague Werner, she actively aid Hunters by deploying traps in battle. She also often accompanies Nata, the lost child from the Keepers tribe, to make sure he’s safe during their expeditions.

Still, she seems sentimental about her old travels. She can be seen sporting a similar jacket to Caravaneer’s Hawk Jacket. Gemma wears a similar tool belt like her master, The Man, and carries a Yian Kut-Ku plushie gifted by the Caravan’s Handler, Sophia the Guildmarm.
