Monster Hunter has come a long way since its PlayStation 2 debut in 2004. Once a niche action RPG series with a strong cult following in Japan, it has now evolved into one of the best-selling franchises in gaming history. With over 116 million units sold across all titles, it has transformed into Capcom’s second flagship series just behind Resident Evil. Safe to say that it’s now also one of the most popular RPG franchise, rivaling even Pokemon and Final Fantasy. So how much of a mark has the hunting game left in the industry after Wilds’ massive success? Let’s take a peek at our complete Monster Hunter sales chart.
Monster Hunter Games Sales Chart (2025)

The original Monster Hunter on PS2 sold less than 300,000 copies in Japan, but it laid the foundation for something much bigger. While the game struggled to gain mainstream traction, the series found its breakthrough on the PSP. With Freedom Unite introduced the franchise to a much wider audience, it became the best-selling PSP game at the time.
Despite strong sales from 4 Ultimate and Generations, the series was still considered niche outside Japan — until Monster Hunter World shook the, well, world. Unlike past entries, which were handheld and Japan-centric, World launched globally on PS4, Xbox One, and later, PC. It became Capcom’s biggest hit, selling 5 million copies on its launch weekend and 10 million in eight months.
Building on that success, Monster Hunter Wilds is setting new records, surpassing 10 million units in just over a month. With such momentum, the franchise might as well have truly become the next global phenomenon.
