If you’ve spent any time in the Monster Hunter community, chances are you’ve heard the name ‘Steve’ thrown around. Interestingly, that name seem to have nothing to do with a secret NPC — or obviously, has anything to do with Minecraft. It turns out, Steve is a name with deep meme roots, one that traces all the way back to Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate‘s promotional cycle. It also came from a very unexpected source: Capcom itself.
The origin of the ‘Steve’ nickname goes back to April 21, 2014, during a Monster Hunter Mondays 4/21 live at 3pm PT community Twitch livestream. In the comments section of the YouTube archive video, a fan asked about the name of the new flagship monster being teased for 4 Ultimate. At the time, the monster had only appeared and had no publicly revealed name.
Capcom’s then-community manager Yuri Araujo cheekily replied, “For now, how about ‘Steve’?” Unfortunately, YouTube updates often purged old comments and this meme’s original beginning has been lost. Nevertheless, by that moment the legend was born and preserved well throughout the years via fan retellings.
When the game dropped in Japan on October 2014, said monster would finally be revealed as Seregios, a golden-scaled Flying Wyvern armed with razor-sharp scales. But for many Western fans, Seregios would forever be ‘Steve’ first and foremost. The name was so absurd but casually delivered as both start with ‘S.’ It quickly catch on, becoming a fandom in-joke, shared across forums and even gameplay streams.

According to longtime fans, Yuri later admitted he regretted the comment due to how strongly the nickname took off. But the internet had already decided anyway; ‘Steve’ was canon in the hearts of the people.
To this day, if one were to Google for ‘Steve Monster Hunter,’ various fan tributes, confused forum questions, and nostalgic threads appear. It’s a testament to how even the smallest community interaction can permanently shape parts of identity of a beloved franchise.
