How to Get Layered Armor and Change Armor Color in Monster Hunter Wilds

In this series, hunting gigantic and fearsome monsters is only part of the thrill. Looking stylish while doing it is just as important! Introduced in Monster Hunter Generations, the Layered Armor transmog system lets you do exactly that. Fortunately, Layered Armor returns in Monster Hunter Wilds, allowing you to mix and match styles without sacrificing those juicy stats. From showing off exclusive event gear or just color-coordinate your look, here’s how to use the feature.

How to Unlock and Change Layered Armor

Unlocking Layered Armor pieces is easy; all you have to do is craft any High Rank armor you fancy. This works for both your Hunter and Palico. However, the option to make High Rank gear only opens up after you reach Chapter 4. After defeating the target Bird Wyvern in the Scarlet Forest, speak to Gemma. She will will introduce you to the whole Layered Armor system.

For those of you who pre-ordered Monster Hunter Wilds or purchased the Premium Deluxe Edition, though. you will have access to Layered Armor from the start. Simply claim the bonus rewards from the ‘Claim Content’ menu in a Base Camp’s Support Desk. Here are some exclusive Layered Armor in the game:

Layered Armor NameHow to Get
Guild Knight SetPre-order exclusive
Yian Kut-Ku Plush PendantOpen beta exclusive
Feudal Soldier SetPurchase the Deluxe Pack DLC
Oni Horns WigPurchase the Deluxe Pack DLC
Fencer’s EyepatchPurchase the Deluxe Edition
Wyverian EarsPurchase the Premium Deluxe Edition

Now that you’ve crafted a Layered Armor, you can equip it at any tent by following these steps:

  1. Enter the tent at a Camp.
  2. Select the most-right ‘Appearance Menu’ from the tabs.
  3. Select ‘Equipment Appearance.’
  4. Choose a body part; Head, Chest, Arms, Waist, Legs, and Pendants for your weapons.
  5. Select the desired Layered Armor piece and press X/A/Left Click to equip it.

You can also use this menu to change the primary and secondary color of each piece and toggle armor visibility for a minimalist look. Click on the ‘Pigment’ colored boxes option to change color and click on the toggle button to hide the armor.

Like regular armor sets, Layered Armor can be saved into loadouts, allowing you to quickly switch between different looks. This makes it easier to match your appearance to different builds or just change styles whenever you like.

Is There Layered Weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Monster Hunter World Iceborne and Rise Sunbreak offer players the option to change weapon skins via the Layered Weapon features. Unfortunately, the system is absent in Monster Hunter Wilds — at least for now.

We think it’s safe to assume that Capcom will add Layered Weapons to Monster Hunter Wilds through the inevitable Master Rank expansion or a Title Update. Until then, stay tuned to Monster Hunter HQ for more news and updates on the Monster Hunter series.

Layered Armor is a great way to personalize your Hunter’s appearance in Monster Hunter Wilds. Whether through crafting, DLC, or pre-order bonuses, it gives you full control over your hunter’s look while maintaining optimal meta sets.
