Who is Professor Fabius? Monster Hunter Lore, Explained

0
By Sidharta F. Rasidi on March 5, 2025 Features, Monster Hunter Wilds

Fabius the is one of the major supporting casts of Monster Hunter Wilds. As the leader of the Hunter’s Guild, he’s the one who tasked Avis and Astrum Unit to investigate the mysteries of the Forbidden Lands. However, Fabius’s story actually began a couple of entries before, where he played a role in uncovering the truth behind the Frenzy Virus. Once known as the Ace Lancer, he continues his mission; this time not just as a hunter, but also as a mentor. Let’s take a peek at how Fabius’s story unfolds throughout the series.

Note: There are major spoilers for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and Wilds!

Where Fabius’ Story in the Monster Hunter World All Began

The journey begins in the bustling desert trade city of Val Habar of Monster Hunter 4. The Caravaneer, a charismatic leader, recruits the player’s Hunter for a dangerous quest: hunting a massive desert-dwelling elder dragon Dah’ren Mohran. After proving their skills, the Caravan sets out on a grand journey, traveling through various regions while seeking legendary treasures.

During their travels, eventually the Caravan crosses paths with the Ace Hunters, a team of elite warriors. Julius the Ace Commander and his team, including Fabius the Ace Lancer, lead the charge in studying and combating a terrifying affliction spreading among monsters. Called the Frenzy Virus, this disease turns monsters into mindless berserkers with heightened aggression and power, posing a massive threat to the ecosystems.

As the Caravan and Ace Hunters follow the trail of Frenzied monsters, they encounter Gore Magala, the creature behind the outbreak. It releases pollen-like scales to track prey through heat but also spread the Frenzy Virus, which it transmits through breath attacks or scattered pools. Player’s Hunter and the Aces faced against him a few times, but the black-clad monster always got away from their grasps.

During one of their missions, Fabius ventured alone to track Gore Magala, only to be ambushed and severely injured. Just when it seemed the monster would finish him off, Aiden the Ace Cadet and the player’s Hunter arrived, saving his life. Ultimately, the Ace Hunters entrusted the Hunter with slaying Gore Magala, and Shagaru Magala, its evolved form that has fully embraced the virus’s power.

With the crisis resolved, Fabius and the Ace Hunters bid farewell to the Caravaneers and set out on their next mission.

Defending Dondurma: The Battle Against Rusted Kushala Daora

Later, the Caravaneer and their Hunter arrived in Dondurma, the heart of the Hunter’s Guild. Fabius and the Ace Hunters were there to welcome them. However, their reunion was cut short as the city came under attack by a Rusted Kushala Daora. This variant of an older Kushala Daora keeps developing metallic skin so thick, it rusted from age.

Julius revealed that this very Kushala Daora was the same one his Master had once fought. Years ago, a simple hunt against Rathian turned sideways as the Elder Dragon joined the fray. Said beast ended up leaving the Ace Commander’s Master heavily injured, forcing him into retirement. Now, with Dondurma under siege, it was time for payback.

Fabius took a strategic position in the city’s Ballista defenses, providing covering fire as his teammates launched a coordinated counterattack using Bowguns and Cannons.

But, as everything seemed to come to an end, Aiden’s reckless actions nearly got both him and Julius killed. As they braced for a crushing wind blast, Fabius shielded his friends just in time.

With their combined efforts, the player’s Hunter and the Aces finally repelled the Rusted Kushala Daora. Their ultimate weapons, the Dragonator and Demolisher Cannon, were deployed to deal a devastating blow to the dragon. Fabius later accompanied Julius to bid farewell to their retired Master, who entrusted them with a parting gift — a sword symbolizing their legacy.

Fabius New Role in Monster Hunter Wilds

Years passed, and Fabius has now transitioned from a frontline hunter to a scholar. Known as a biologist, he dedicated himself to research and became the leader of the Hunter’s Guild. By the time of Monster Hunter Wilds, Fabius had assembled an investigation team tasked with charting the unexplored Forbidden Lands.

During this expedition, his team discovered Nata, a lost boy from the Keepers Tribe. Recognizing the importance of this encounter, Fabius assigned the Wilds Hunter and Alma as their Handler to help return Nata to his people.

Through a series of events, Fabius’s investigation team uncovered an astonishing truth. The Keepers served as protectors of the Guardians, ancient bio-engineered monsters created by the lost Wyverian civilization.

For most of Monster Hunter Wilds, however, Fabius remained behind the scenes. But, everything changed when signs of the Frenzy Virus reemerged in the Forbidden Lands. Knowing from his own experience how devastating an outbreak is, he could not stand idle.

Accompanied by Wilds Hunter and his bodyguards, Cobb and Rex, Fabius set out to trace the source of the virus. Their mission quickly went awry when they were ambushed by a Gore Magala, along with several Frenzied Temnocerans. Armed with a deep understanding of the virus, Fabius fought alongside the Hunter, proving that he had not lost his edge.

The team managed to defeat Gore Magala, halting the spread of the Frenzy — at least for the time being.

Fabius the Ace Lancer’s Personality

Fabius is a jovial person with a straightforward personality, often making unintentional jokes while speaking. One of the most famous Monster Hunter quotes came from him: “But when Gunlancers attack, their vigorous thrusts can result in an explosive climax!”

In Monster Hunter 4, he and his fellow Ace Hunters acted as the weapon tutorial guides, providing commentaries and insights on how they work. Though Fabius is no longer a part of the Ace Hunter by Monster Hunter Wilds, his wisdom continues to shape the next generation. His mastery of the Lance and Gunlance also remains unparalleled, and when duty calls, he does not hesitate to return to battle.

Like the Caravaneers, he shares a fond bond with Gemma, the Little Miss Forge. In Monster Hunter Wilds, Fabius can be seen reminiscing about her childhood and plans to tell stories of her ‘triumphs’ with pride.

In his debut, the Ace Lancer wore an unknown golden colored armor and wields the Babel Spear Lance. Fabius once again wields the Babel Spear and clad in the Ingot Set in Monster Hunter Wilds as he helped the Hunter face against Gore Magala.
