Monster Hunter Wilds’ Creepiest Monster Pays Tribute to History’s Most Infamous Assassins

Monster Hunter Wilds is full of surprises, especially when it comes to its deep lore built over two decades. But players have just uncovered a chilling Easter egg hidden within the names of Xu Wu’s weapons. As if the black, tentacled monster wasn’t terrifying enough; its known to stalk its Guardian prey in eerie silence with crystallized claws and blender-like teeth. However, its weapons carry an even darker secret.

Reddit user EgoVermin discovered that all Xu Wu’s weapons names are references to infamous assassins throughout history:

  • Cordayle’s Revocation Sword and Shield: Named after Charlotte Corday, who assassinated French revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat in his bathtub.
  • Prinvilo’s Dissolution Great Sword: A reference to Gavrilo Princip, whose assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand triggered World War I.
  • Zaccio’s Execution Hammer: Based on Lorenzaccio, an Italian nobleman who killed a Florence tyrant and his cousin, Alessandro de’ Medici.
  • Brutus’s Abolishment Switch Axe: A clear nod to Marcus Brutus, Julius Caesar’s famous assassin.
  • Kae-Jin’s Lament Hunting Horn: A tribute to Jing Ke, the Chinese assassin who attempted to kill the King of Qin.
  • Bookwilthe’s Punisher Bow: Inspired by John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated US President Abraham Lincoln.

Fans have been quick to react. Some praised Capcom’s dark-but-fitting references and others wonder if there are other real-life historical connections buried in the game.

User Supernova_Soldier joked, “Hilarious. I wield the sword that’s named after the dude that started WWI!”

OverlyHastey wrote, “And here I am making my character Abraham Lincoln, these folks go out and put my killer’s name on a weapon… smh.”

Meanwhile, other players were surprised that certain assassins — and weapons — were left out.

GodlessLunatic wrote, “No greatsword called Hassan’s Eveningbell? ONE JOB.” referring to Hasan al-Sabbah, the founder of the Order of Assassins sect. It’s definitely a missed opportunity considering the armor sets itself lets you cosplay as a discount Assassin’s Creed‘s Altair.

Drywall_Spreadsheet noted, “No dual blades though.” With kuri-kuma chimed in, “The most ‘assassin’-esque of all the MH weapons. A disappointing exclusion.”

It is indeed disappointing that not all weapons got its weapon tree. But whatever the case, Xu Wu’s weapons certainly live up to its creepy and deadly fights!
