Quematrice Full Monster Guide (Strategies, Loot Table, Craftable Items) for Monster Hunter Wilds

By Julio La Pine on February 28, 2025 Guides, Monster Hunter Wilds

As the second monster you’ll face in Monster Hunter Wilds, Quematrice can be a significant increase in difficulty, especially since this is the first foe that starts dishing out elemental attacks. Beyond its fiery moves and fast combos, this flaming cockatrice-like enemy has other mechanics that can catch many hunters off-guard. But if you’re looking to hunt this creature to unlock a new armor set, fire-infused weapons, or something else, we’ve prepared a guide with everything you need to know about Quematrice.

Quematrice Strategy

In Monster Hunter Wilds, Quematrice is a monster that prefers to attack fast and keep hunters at bay with its fiery moves. Its tail can hit you while also burning you, and this monster will usually leave vapors on the ground that it can then ignite to cause damage. Bringing protection against Fireblight is ideal, but if you’re playing in Low Rank, you might not have access to this for a while. For a hunter’s second encounter, Quematrice might prove quite challenging, so we’ve prepared a few tips for melee and ranged players.

Melee Strategy

Quematrice has three weak points: its head, neck, and tail. Melee hunters will want to prioritize the head and neck first before moving to the tail. We recommend this order because a Quematrice at full HP is much faster and attacks relentlessly. Plus, it will constantly attack with its tail, trying to burn you, so it is better to focus on weakening its head and neck first. Once you break a few parts and exploit some wounds, it’s time to move to the tail.

The best time for melee users to attack Quematrice’s tail is when the monster is down. You can achieve this by breaking leg wounds or attacking its head constantly. Once Quematrice falls, hit its tail as much as possible. All types of damage are equally effective to its weak body parts, so any weapon should do the trick.

However, if your priority is severing Quematrice’s tail to carve it, you can focus on the tail first by following a few strategies. Before a tail attack, Quematrice will always wind up its tail a little bit. When you see that happen, run to its head and wait for the attack to go off, then move in to hit the tail. You can repeat this until you sever the tail. If you see vapors on the ground, though, run away and wait for them to get ignited. Stepping on them will also damage you, so always pay attention to where the vapors land.

Ranged Strategy

While Quematrice is deadly at close range, its vapors can also make things difficult for ranged hunters. The strategy should be the same as the above, with the only difference being the parts you’ll focus on first.

As a ranged hunter, attacking the tail should be a priority. Since you’ll need to be far away from the hunter to attack it, its fire and vapor moves will make it harder for you to get a clean shot. If possible, aim for the tail and sever it as soon as you can. Once you do it, you can focus on attacking the head.

Water ammo will be your best friend here. If you have the opportunity to craft it, bring all your water ammo to the fight. This will weaken the monster considerably, especially if you aim for its weak body parts.

Weak Points and Elemental Weaknesses

Since Quematrice focuses on attacks that inflict Fireblight, one of elemental effects in Monster Hunter Wilds, so the best element to counter it is water. If you already have a few water-infused weapons, bring them to the fight. The same applies to water ammo. Also, we’ve included a list of the effectiveness of each element and all status effects.

  • Recommended Elemental Attack: Water.

Spawn Zones and Variants

Quematrice will often spawn in the Plains and Wyveria, two of the zones in Monster Hunter Wilds. In the former, you’ll find it near the river outside of the base camp. In Wyveria, it will usually roam around the map. So far, we’ve found Quematrice in its normal and Tempered variants. If you’re at High Rank already, prioritize hunting its Tempered form to obtain Artian materials.
