How Does Whiteflame Torrent Skill Actually Work in Monster Hunter Wilds? Explained

Whiteflame Torrent, the skill from Zoh Shia weapon is one of the most interesting skills in Monster Hunter Wilds. It basically works like Blast but more consistent and even synergize with an armor skill. While it’s not going to be an essential skill for speedrunners, this skill could be meta for regular Hunters… except for one particular weapon. So how does Whiteflame Torrent actually work, and what weapon should you use it with? Let’s take a peek at the quick breakdown below.

Whiteflame Torrent: Chance to deal additional damage after landing an attack.

LevelDescription
1Activates skill effect (When used with Scorcher, does not stack but adds extra fire damage)

The description actually perfectly describe how the skill works — albeit very simplified. In short, Whiteflame Torrent works somewhat similarly to Blast status. While attacking a monster, Whiteflame Torrent can proc and deal a flat 50 damage or so.

Of course, in true Monster Hunter skills fashion, the devil is in the details. First thing first, how often Whiteflame Torrent actually trigger?

Interestingly, it seems the always skill activates randomly after a set number of hits. However, the dice roll for the proc only becomes active every 3 seconds. That means, it doesn’t matter how fast your DPS with Archdemon Mode is. You still have to wait every 3 seconds before Whiteflame Torrent has a chance to proc from one of your hit.

Then, every time the Whiteflame Torrent proc, the system keep rolling to check if the skill should proc again or not during those 3 seconds. According to observations, on average, the skill activates once every 2 to 3 attacks at most.

Still, a burst of 100+ damage is basically four times of most basic damage in a span of 3 seconds. Not to mention Whiteflame Torrent stays consistent, unlike status effects that get harder to trigger the more you use them. The skill always has a chance to proc. Not bad at all!

As mentioned in the skill description, it has a synergy with a particular set bonus, making the damage scale even higher. Equip Scorcher, Rathalos‘ armor set bonus, and you get:

  • Scorcher Level 1 (2 pieces): +400 Fire attack.
  • Scorcher Level 2 (4 pieces): +1,000 Fire attack.

Despite that, there are some things you need to consider when using Whiteflame Torrent in Monster Hunter Wilds.

You might want to get Handicraft or Protective Polish, as Sharpness level seems to affect how often it procs. Then some attacks will never trigger Whiteflame Torrent, no matter how hard you mash. Such as Gunlance Shelling attacks and Long Sword’s Spirit Helmbreaker.

Unfortunately for Gunlance users, Guardian Arkveld weapon is still the better choice despite the Slightly Strong Shelling damage. But the skill should complement well with most other weapons like Great Sword, Sword and Shield, and Bowguns. Even slower weapons should not have to worry as DPS have no correlation to how often Whiteflame Torrent procs.
